Pakistan's new T20I era begins tonight. Under new captain Sahibzada Farhan, the hosts take on Sri Lanka in the first of three T20Is at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium — the start of Sri Lanka's multi-format tour of Pakistan and the first real test of Farhan's leadership since the Asian Games.

Pakistan: a new captain, fresh momentum
Pakistan walk into this series with genuine momentum. A silver medal at the 2026 Asian Games — with Farhan himself leading the side — was followed by an impressive 2026 T20 World Cup campaign for the new skipper personally. The board has now handed him the T20I captaincy full-time, and tonight is his first home assignment in the role.
The squad blends experience with new blood. Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub and Shadab Khan bring the senior core; Naseem Shah leads an attack that looks, on paper, the stronger of the two sides. Behind the stumps, Khawaja Nafay gets his chance, while names like Maaz Sadaqat, Hasan Nawaz, Abdul Samad and Arafat Minhas show the selectors are investing in youth. Abrar Ahmed and Sufyan Moqim offer spin variety alongside Shadab.
The big question is not talent — it is how quickly Farhan's ideas translate into a settled XI and a clear game plan at home.
Sri Lanka: Mendis's men need a reset
Sri Lanka arrive needing to put a difficult recent run in T20Is behind them. Their brightest light is the captain himself: Kusal Mendis was in excellent touch on Sri Lanka's recent tour of England and remains the wicketkeeper-batter everything revolves around.
Around him there is depth and variety. Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka and Dunith Wellalage add all-round options; Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara and Binura Fernando form a bowling group with real T20 pedigree — Theekshana's mystery spin in particular can trouble any batting line-up on a helpful surface.
Sri Lanka's challenge is consistency: turning individual quality into twenty good overs, twice.
Key battles to watch
Farhan vs Theekshana. Pakistan's new captain loves to take the attack to spin early. Theekshana's variations in the powerplay could decide the tone of the innings.
Pakistan's pace vs Mendis. Naseem Shah with the new ball against Sri Lanka's in-form captain is the marquee contest of the evening. If Pakistan strike early, Sri Lanka's middle order comes under real pressure.
Shadab and Abrar vs the middle overs. Rawalpindi often rewards stroke-makers, so the team that controls overs 7–15 usually controls the game. Pakistan's spin twins against Shanaka, Kamindu Mendis and Wellalage is where the match can swing.
The finishers. Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz for Pakistan; Shanaka for Sri Lanka. In a high-scoring game — which Rawalpindi often produces — the last five overs decide it.
Pitch and conditions
Rawalpindi's surface has traditionally been a good one for batting — true bounce, quick outfield, and short square boundaries that reward stroke-makers. Expect another high-scoring contest tonight rather than a low, grinding one. Both teams have the firepower for it, but Pakistan's slightly deeper and more varied bowling attack gives them the edge if the game goes the distance.
Evening games at Rawalpindi also tend to bring dew later on, which can make gripping the ball harder for spinners in the second innings — another reason the toss could matter more than usual.
Squads
Pakistan: Sahibzada Farhan (c), Khawaja Nafay (wk), Fakhar Zaman, Maaz Sadaqat, Hasan Nawaz, Abdul Samad, Shadab Khan, Arafat Minhas, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Abrar Ahmed, Sufyan Moqim, Saim Ayub, Razaullah, Mohammad Imran Randhawa.
Sri Lanka: Kusal Mendis (c, wk), Sineth Jayawardena, Lahiru Udara, Kamil Mishara, Kamindu Mendis, Sahan Arachchige, Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara, Binura Fernando, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Eshan Malinga.
Zavia's take
Pakistan start as favourites — home conditions, a settled core, momentum from the Asian Games, and the stronger bowling combination. But T20 cricket punishes complacency fast, and Sri Lanka have the two things that upset favourites: a world-class spinner in Theekshana and a captain in red-hot form.
Our call: Pakistan edge it, but only if their new-ball bowlers land the early blows. If Mendis survives the powerplay, this becomes anybody's game. Expect runs — plenty of them.
The series continues with the 2nd T20I on Sunday, October 11, and the 3rd on Tuesday, October 13 — both at Rawalpindi, both at 6:00 PM PKT.
